Briancon is officially the highest town in Europe with the old town being a walled medieval citadel. It has a great snow record over recent years and extensive snow cannon coverage as a backup. If the snow is down to the valley you have doorstep skiing and much more to do in an evening than in most French ski villages.

In the summer Briancon is a great base to explore the Alps or to do a range of activities (eg hiking, white water rafting, mountain biking, climbing, golf at Montgenevre, sailing at Lac Embrun and being pampered at the Monetier Les Bains hot-spa).
